Euros name their favorite American authors

>Euros name their favorite American authors
>always Poe, Dreiser and Twain
Is it just because they write simple sentences that are easy to understand? Are these the ones Euros read in school?

no we dont read american authors at school we have our own literature

>Poe, Dreiser
Were never popular in Russia.
Twain is usual children books, tom sawyer you know.
Russians like Hemingway, Stephen King.

>Dreiser
>not popular in Russia
I've met numerous Russians who say "The Financier" is one of their favorite books. Always thought it was an odd selection, maybe a curricular holdover from Soviet times.

>a curricular holdover from Soviet times.
This.

Dreiser was considered trendy back then, and was hard to find.

Poe's short stories are likely to be read by gay goths, which in turn are likely to be heavy internet users. It's a shame because he's kind of underrated as a poet. Mark Twain is usually read in schools yes.

And you are correct in that it's likely because of the simple language as well as a lack of sub-vocalization.

Also Jack London, O.Henry, Steinbeck.

I think Jack London used to be popular but is somewhat forgotten, my parents would read him a lot but I've never heard him mentioned by someone my age.

Russians usually have a taste for short prose, thanks to Chekhov.

>muh europeanz
>as in 2-3 countries that I pay attention to and I'm tsundere about
>ugh

every time

I like Lovecraft's meandering nonsense. Much like Bong Dunsany.

Cormac Blood Tampon McCarthy looks interesting but I don't have the time.

McCarthy os the greatest living US author give it a go

>Cormac Blood Tampon McCarthy looks interesting but I don't have the time.
If you do read him I recommend reading out loud, it makes a lot more sense with the actual rhythm and intonation of the words, much like poetry.

We do not read any american author at school

They said that about Finnegans Wake and it was total bullshit

Because people simply don't have the time to spend reading Faulkner, lmao

Cannot comment on that as I have never read it, I'd imagine at least a working knowledge of linguistics would be required in that case.

the only french literature I ever read in school was Old Milon or Le Père Milon by Guy de Maupassant

Add Bradbury to the list.

>Didn't read any Twain
Really though?

We read 1 book per year on average at school. French stuff mostly.

maybe because we dont know a lot of others

who?

but in general BIG BOY cultural countries don't stoop to read anglo "literature"

we read Kurt Vonnegutt at school and I dont remember what else
we also watched gladiator

From USA I actually like Phillip K. Dick. What else? Gaiman is not bad. Why does that sound so gay? Whats wrong with you, america?

I like Dann Simmons too.

My most beloved author is Russian though. Bulhakov. Master and Margarita is great.

I read books

You forgot the meme arrow

>american authors
I don't know anyone besides lovecraft and clancy

Is that the standard for french schools? It's a weirdly small amount.
I'm not sure if I remember correctly, a couple of years passed, but we had at least 4 books per a school year that were obligatory reading.

>reading books is soy
I think being anti-intellectual is soy as fuck
people should be smart and strong

Who the fuck reads foreign literature in school? How much of a literaturelet do you have to be? For me its the Lusiadas, dab on Eça.

There is no preconception of "soy" in here, at least no strict one. It's mostly "I don't respect something you are doing - ur a soyboy".

Don't get me wrong, I know it's not a fake thing and soyboys are around us, but they are mostly about overexitements about big franchises, beta behaviour and no masculine traits.

In our school system around 80 percent must be polish, but there are some books from authors like Goethe, Conrad, Camus or Kafka that are mandatory.

Also, of course, greek pieces like Oedipus the King and such are also discussed

Sophocles is the only author worth anyone's time on that list

I actually liked The Plague and Heart of Darkness
(also I've just remembered Joseph Conrad was of polish heritage, so no wonder he's book is an obligatory reading in here)

This
We read literally only German books
Plus Shakespeare in English class
Good taste

Yeah, English was Conrad's third language and he didn't become fluent in it until his late 20s. Pretty impressive that he turned out to be one of the most respected writers in the English language.

Melville is great.

>American authors
Who?

Gaddis, Pynchon, Faulkner, Melville

Ezra

Thomas Pynchon

>The most important man in American literature is a no-no to talk about because he had a fetish for Mussolini
JUST

>having favorite American authors

Pessoa > Gil Vicente (even tho he was a playwright) > Camões > Eça > the rest

Based and W.A.S.T.E. pilled

I thought leftists worshiped Steinbeck because of his portrayal of working class poverty, I know the Soviets considered him a great author.

Stephen King is the definition of a hack.

If he is a hack. Why is King so popular and rich? Hmmm?
