1. Catholicism is a very global religion and you're being highly selective here. I imagine that your idea of catholic is Mexico while your idea of protestant is Norway. 'Global cherrypicking' can work both ways. Who's up for comparing Luxembourg to Botswana? It's important to for all factors -not just religion- eliminate as many circumstantial factors as possible.

2. If we just look at Europe we see that the differences become less pronounced and that these differences also follow a general north-south axis. A good example is Ireland - Britain, with the former actually being more prosperous than the latter (poverty in Britain is actually so high, it has the first UN investigation into poverty for a developed country. An estimated 1 in 3 children in Britain grow up in poverty [inews.co.uk/news/uk/child-poverty-uk-rising-joseph-rowntree-report/]). The reason why overall protestant Europe is (currently) more prosperous than overall catholic Europe could be because protestantism is dominant in the north and catholicism in the south. That's why we see that northern catholics do well and southern non-catholics do poorly. There are no southern protestants but I highly doubt that Poortugal would do better if it were suddenly protestant.

3. The North-South difference could have multiple explanations in and of itself. Some say that southern cultures are simply more collectivist, meaning they more easily fall for the trap of socialism. Others point to the fact that they never got the 'head start' of the industrial revolution considering coal is practically absent in the southern parts of Europe. Exceptions are France (in the north) and Northern Italy. Oh look, two regions that are doing relatively well. I'm inclined to agree. I think C.S. Lewis' idea of "mere Christianity" or Christianity stripped down to its bones is a good idea. We have our differences on how to "dress" it, but as long as the "naked" Christianity is proper then it's all good. I'd put more emphasis on trans-denominational dogma's like the Trinity, Salvation and Jesus as the Way over minor squabbles over original sin or predestination (though I obviously have my own ideas about those subjects).
