It's also because the French are perfectionists at their language. Regular, seemingly normal French people (multiple of them) will get offended if you say you like the québécois accent. I've unironically have multiple of them tell me exactly that that imperfect, québécois accent is a disgusting disgrace and it is vomit-enducing. Go to twitch chat of a french esports tournament, and watch the chat erupt in laughter and mockery, whenever someone with a Belgian, working class, or even southern French accent speaks.
The French are so used to being heavily judged on their own accent and mocking those with non-standard ones that they are oftentimes too shy to speak English, for fear of looking retarded. Grammar is treated similarly in French culture, so they are deathly afraid of making any mistakes in English.
