The older people knew about Romania because of communism. The ones my age 20-30 didn't know much about Europe. They think most foreigners are like Americans. They call us all "Westerners". Some were put off when they heard I wasn't from France, the UK or the US. No possible greencard/schengen passport for them if they hook up with me. I did find one Chinese chick who was into British stuff and boned her a couple of times. I was mostly too busy with the Russians and Ukrainian girls to bother with the Chinese.

I was in Tianjin, which is 120-ish kilometers from Beijing and is one of the big cities. It has 12 million people so if you move to a quarter that's not near some university, most Chinese will be surprised to see you there. Most thought I was an English teacher and were much more receptive when they found out I was learning Chinese.

I got there with a bilateral government scholarship. Each year they send 20 Chinese over here and we send 20 Romanians over there. Some universities accept you for Chinese classes no matter what. You don't need their version of bacalaureate to attend. Just have a scholarship or pay the tuition. Some give the tuition for free if you fly there and pay for lodging. I got everything for free but if I failed I would have to pay every cent back. I've been thinking of moving to Taiwan but they're workaholics and more westernized. Sichuan with all the pandas also sounds comfy since the people there are well-known for being easy-going.

One of the funniest things I saw while I was there was the introduction of the concept of "The Chinese Dream". Sort of like the American one but with harmony and prosperity. Most people told me the actual Chinese dream is to emigrate to the US/Canada/Australia.

From what I was told by Chinese I know, they want to get rich and THEN emigrate as fast as possible, because they don't trust their own state in the long run.
