Caliphate will come during the time of Al-Mahdi. We're basically living during the end of the times where there's no caliphs and ummah is disintegrated into various kinds of nation-states, just like the prophet Muhammad (pbuh) has prophesized.

The context is about the caliphate, the first it was under the prophet, and then under the lines of prophethood, and then corrupt/erosive monarchy, and then despotism, and then finally, the Caliphate will soon come once again which following on the precept of prophethood.
Today is power vacuum when there's no caliph to govern over the ummah. We're in the gap between the previous despotism and last caliph under al-Mahdi.
