Because they were primitive and didn't have any other food source.

There were food export during the famine, of other crops and cattle. There were also british soldiers to keep the masses out of damaging that trade.

>The Penal Laws, first passed in 1695. were strictly enforced. These laws made it illegal for Catholics (Irish) to own land, and required the transfer of property from Catholics to Protestants;
>to have access to an education, and eliminated Gaelic as a language while preventing the development of an educated class;
>to enter professions, forcing the Irish to remain as sharecropping farmers; or to practice their religion. In addition,
>Catholics (Irish) could not vote, hold an office, purchase land, join the army, or engage in commerce. >Simply put, the British turned the Irish into nothing better than slaves, subsisting on their small rented farms.

Because the fat lard-asses also known as the Irish, ate a daily minimum 6 pounds of potato every day. This level of potato consumption was cut in half during the famine, which ment that the Irish could no longer eat like disgusting pigs anymore, this lead to mass suicides and massive propaganda against the honourable brits.The brits did nothing wrong

They only ate potatoes and were happy with it in the beginning, but after a while they got fed up by the lack of variety and their favourite dish turned into their worst nightmare. They rather starved then to eat another awful potatoe. Moral of the story is that you shouldn't overdo something you like or it will lose it's magic.
