All Russian authorities from the level of village management to the state level are corrupted thieves. They think only about themselves, not about the country.

We are the third wealthiest Orthodox country in the world (after Cyprus and Greece). In Orthodox culture money and material comfort are not that important. It's totally the opposite in Jewish and Protestant cultures. The only two guys in my university class who actually did care about studying and pursuing career were a Volga German and a Jew. A Jewish guy is now an assistant professor at London School of Economics, and Volga German guy is also quite rich and works as a columnist for our country's main newspaper. For Germans, Jews and Anglo-Saxons money and social status are the most important things in life, it's totally different in Orthodox culture. Family and friendship are more important than pursuing a career and working yourself to death.

Corruption is the biggest reason. The mafia also played a big role. It discourages entrepreneurship and investments. Nobody is going to develop anything if they can lose it just as fast.
