I wrote a coursework in my uni concerning the Alaska purchase.
Long story short, Alaska was useless to Russia
1) it was unknown that there are oil reserves
2) the Russian-american, whose only income was the trade of furs, suffered losses and was a pain in the ass for russian government
3) as it was said already by user, US was Russia's partner while Britain remained one of its greatest enemy. It was believed that there was a possibility of Britain's annexation of Alaska, so it would be safer to sell it
4) at the time Europe and Asia seemed more promising to Russia as a zone of influence than America
And so on
There are much more reasons, but these are the main ones

the worst part? we were supposed to annex more than we did
our diplomat felt sympathy as he went to mexico city, demanded less territory than the president and congress had ordered him to take
by the time congress received the official treaty, and realized the error, it was already 5 months after the treaty was signed, so they couldnt do anything about it
we were supposed to get baja (although some southerners aka most who would become prominent leaders in the confederacy, wanted to take top half, aka the further down purple line on pic related, because it was the closest complete telegraph line between the atlantic and pacific oceans)
some wanted to annex yucatan too, then use yucatan to launch an invasion of cuba..... but again, the civil war ruined all sorts of crazy southern/texan plans for occupied mexico...
