im playing the evil campaign, only with Saruman and Lurtz, uruk hai are the best faction in the game
i think i even know the battalions of each armies, there are 2 crossbow/sword combined battalions, 2 crossbow/pike, 2 sword/pike, one sword battalion alone and 2 warg rider battalions
there is room for a siege weapon, i usually make bombs, sometimes ballistas
I like igniting bombs with Saruman
i clear the entire map to have the Balrog in Minas Tirit, i summon him under the horses when they arrive, they all die from summoning Balrog alone, i dont even have a loose horse to kill, maybe one of the heroes

Not my screenshot, but I do prefer ascii.
It feels more clear somehow; the tilesets are to cluttery for my taste (small graphics don't look too good and strain my eyes, and the game isn't about graphics anyway). Plus, it bugs my when a tileset is incomplete/not updated and a letter pops up inbetween for a rare item; I'd rather have everything abstract. Also I have lagging issues with the SDL version (curses runs way smoother).

CDDA is a very complete game, and because it has tilepacks and soundpacks, it doesn't require you to handle ASCII autism. There's a very large degree of freedom in the game. You can build a fortress, or a mobile deathcar, or just destroy literally everything there exists on your way. Or you can mutate into a rat, or into a bear, or transform into a superpowerful cyborg. The lore is actually pretty impressive, it goes way beyond just a zombie apocalypse, there's shit like aliens and mushrooms.

Basically, you throw graphic fidelity out of the window in favor of very, VERY deep gameplay mechanics. The user interface seems cancerous, but it proves very efficient after getting used to. Also, you have permadeath (though you can cheat your way around it easily), forcing you to really think about your next action - and the game gives you the freedom take really bad decisions. It's very autistic overall, and has a crazy learning curve, but you are rewarded with a very interesting game. It's really like reading a book with the most brutal and crazy that writes itself rather than playing a game.
