You have to understand the layout catering to leaving your shoes "outside". Outside refers to maybe just a 2 feet wide space in front of your door (seen from the inside). At least in Germany it's uncommon (in contrast to US homes or apartments) to be directly in your living room after entering through your door. There's usually a (small) corridor where you can put coat hangers, leave your shoes and maybe put up some shelves or wardrobes.
