if taiwan declares independent taiwanese state, it gives up legitimacy of authority over china while china still has legitimacy to claim taiwan. this is a bad thing for taiwan. the dream remains to control the whole country.

Taiwan needs a credible deterrent force. but in my opinion, it's worthless. buying american weapons is only a way to pay tribute to Americans and hope that a good business relationship will convince the PRC that the Americans would be willing to defend them. let's be perfectly honest here, the amount of resources, capabilities and manpower is extremely tilted towards the PRC in a war with Taiwan alone.
