Are Sylheti any different from any other people in Bangladesh? The overwhelming majority of them here are Sylheti.

That seems to be the case in the UK too, interesting.

Anyway Sylhetis have a very different Bengali dialect to the point where many linguists will classify it as a separate language. Apparently it has a lot of Assamese influence.They even had a different script from the bengali script once. They're also known to be more religious and conservative than other Bengalis.

Is that right? if they are, they don't really show it here. I mean, they do set up halal butchers, but that's it. anyway, it's interesting, it's like a sub-group then?

Yep aside from religion there's a difference in dialects and uses in certain vocabulary e.g. our words for water is different. Ours will have a bit more of a farsi/arabic influence while West Bengal has a bit more Sanskrit influence

E.g. We say pani and the West Bengalis say Jol
Overall though it's not a major change as Bengali in general still has a lot of Sanskrit loan words

More or less but the government insists they're all Bengali in the name of unity. Another group that also count as a subgroup would be from Chittagong.
