Once I drove from Krakow to Auschwitz and I noted that the small houses and gardens were very clean and well mantained, so no, not a shithole. On the downside I perceived a lack of peculiar places and architectural landmark, I especially noted that most new churches were horrendous. Also the major roads were in a bad shape but this could have changed since.
