I know this is bait but come on now
Working outside of working hours should be ilegal.
Fuck all of this shit, I'll asking based Vlad to give me some land on far east.
Commitment is a two way street.

>I read a lot of comments to this. I do not think that I saw even one comment that was realistic. I mean, come on, who wants a clock watcher for an employee! Next thing you know they start taking, mind you TAKING. more than one bathroom break per day! Where does it lead? Anarchy! Anarchy! Reds at our doorsteps! Next they want time OFF work to eat lunch! Or maybe time off with pay when they “get sick.” Oh, my gosh, then come requests for raises! RAISES! Like it was not enough that an employer gives them A JOB and 1/2 a Sunday off, ungrateful … wait, somebody just suggested that Saturday and whole Sunday should be off! What are we, the kind people letting the mostly worthless them have our favor to even have jobs! Slaves got paid NOTHING and were grateful for food and place to sleep after honest 14 hour (16 in summer, longer daylight, though I suggest 18 hours, dawn to dusk would be more fair) day workdays -- and now-a-days people actually expect money! It should be bullwhip on the backs of their children! I mean, where is it all going?! Just you wait till General Lee leads us to show those uppity Yankie agitators what real, kind but demanding, bosses really are like! Salaries, payments! They should be glad we LET them work! My Papa, Mr. Ol' Fashion', Sr., bless his soul, would turn in his grave if he heard such blasphemous words!
>Next thing you know they start taking, mind you TAKING. more than one bathroom break per day! Where does it lead? Anarchy! Anarchy! Reds at our doorsteps!
lmao this guy is good
Holy shit this has to be a troll.
no, set off late and leave early. fraud working hours and claim overtime. steal biscuits from all work kitchens
constantly finding and taking better paid jobs with even less responsibility. Give the minimum leave notice and take sick days during this period too. FUCK WAGEKEKERY. I will stamp on every single person i cross until i break free. At my current savings rate i still have 4 years left before im financially independent
In the U.K, unpaid overtime is legal as long as there's some mention somewhere in you contract.
So most companies just get away with it. Sell you the job & salary on specific hours, then have your working however many hours over that they wish, unpaid.
Absolute fucking bullshit.
I know the OP is a troll post but still, if these fucking employers want you to "commit" outside of your standard hours, they should either pay, or give you a share of the business. Otherwise just being a fucking slave.
This is basically the standard in IT and it disgusts me.
t. fell for the CS meme
In a capitalistic society it's the responsibility of all employers and employees to try to fuck and exploit each other as much as possible so the cream will rise to the top.
I do maybe 2.5h of work a day
Only if you enable it. Grow a pair
If you have to ask, you're definitely in the spectrum. Get checked, my negro.
As long as your average pay doesn't fall under minimum wage. That kind of entails which jobs do this.
Any hours overtime I work I can knock off from the next shift or build up an extra day off
I'm definitely not enabling it bro, that's why I'm unemployed atm lol.
based
same bro. fuck em. ive got like 2 months before i need to find another wagecuck IT job though
To be fair, I take like 2-3 extensive paid shits per day.
Smokers get to smoke on company time, so as a non-smoker I feel entitled to get paid to shit as compensation for my lack of smoking privileges.
I have in the past and it didn't kill me. It depends on the job and the company. If it's leading to something better, the work is actually fun sometimes, or the people are just super cool, I don't mind working an hour overtime here and there, but at my current job I don't do it at all because these people will take a mile if you give an inch.
You have to wonder though like wtf: do old people actually think this way? Expecting people to literally work without being paid. Or is this just some kind of multi-layered satire.
I guess they unironically lived in a time when relative income was so high that you could literally work for nothing half the day and still afford a house and several children on one income in your mid-20s.
just like in communism.
hell no.
i'm not even showing up if i don't feel like it.
I commit myself outside of mandatory hours and far beyond that. I have tripled my salary in the last few years. I've lost a lot of time I'll never get back. I can't really say if it's worth it or not.
only do this if its really necessary, liek if an important person comes the next day, you are janitor and the rooms arent clean. otherwise dont do it, its slavery.
Will the CEO also pay the employee, when the employee does not work there anymore? If not, why does the employee have to work for the CEO, without getting paid?
in a communist society it's the responsibility of the state employees and political classes to try to fuck and exploit each other and skim off the top as much as possible until civilization collapses under inefficient bureaucracy
are you just another entitled CEO that doesn't pay a livable wage?
Because they seem to think it's still the 60s or that any experience they have from previous decades is relevant today.
"Hey guys, you can totally make enough money to live like a human being by working 80 hours a week. It worked like that when I was 25 so it has to work that way now."
>steal biscuits from all work kitchens
based and redpilled
Livable wage? Why would you need a livable wage? You have the privilege of slowing dying in the West, that's better than life being livable, you entitled millennial.
Lmfao this is literally an npc diary
>slowing dying
SlowLY dying, ffs...
Because fuck you wagie. You should be grateful that you are allowed to work.
nigga fuck you, I'll just work for BTC instead.
Dearest CEO: I do about 20 minutes of work per week here because college degrees do not make one intelligent and you think you need a full time sysadmin to have something to brag about with your golf buddies.
t. sysadmin with HS diploma
tfw you will never be a wagie working in your own cagie.
Why even live?
ITSec flag here. Since when is it standard to work outside of business hours? I only had to do this once in my career and it was because I was working with customers overseas. And any time I spent working at home I deducted from time in the office. If I had to take a call and work from 8pm to midnight I didnt show up at the office until noon. This was when I worked for Symantec, on salary.
Not really though, he looks like a based guy.
He shows up for his job and tackles it with efficiency He's not "cheating" his boss out of paid work time, but he's not doing anything for free either, he leaves when he's done.
I envy these kind of guys for beign able to switch on and off work mode without any bullshit.
The NPCs are all the other late worker bastards running the PLEASE_SHEKELBERG script.
I have only ever stayed behind to finish up work because I fucked off during the day. Anyone that does otherwise is being assfucked by their company.
ITsec is different since they expect you to think and not kindly copy paste the needful
Exactly. He's doing what he's meant to to a T.
They should piss off if they're not willing to pay you to work, unless you're getting a % of the profits as a bonus or something.
I worked from the ground up. I did help desk work, moved into customer support for an AV company. Worked up to leading their tech team, moved to Symantec, and 2 other well known companies since. I've never seen or heard of this kind of expectation anywhere in IT, except for maybe project management and PR.
I am out at 5:30 on the dot.
>Falls for the uni meme
>goes to a good uni

>Spend a year applying for jobs and constantly rejected due to a "lack of exp" or "we're looking for people who are more grape/dragon fruit"
>Finally get an offer
>Turn up, 2 hours into my 1st work day realise that suicide is the only way out.
>Job is misadvertised, no training, sink or swim.
>1 week in and only do 10% of what was mentioned on the advert, 90% is data entry and helping dumb fuck managers query databases because none of them fucking know how.
>office has excel 2007 32bit on 64bit pcs, spend 50% of my time waiting for this shit to calculate
>write a simple python script that eliminates trims down my work day to about 1-1/2 hours doing the shit that i actually enjoy doing and initially applied to do
>tell my manager that i can increase office productivity and save the comp money
>"Oh nice, just email me about it and we can discuss it "offline"later
>Co-workers are Stacie's/john's who spend 95% of their day socialising and then spend 2/3 hours doing unpaid overtime
>My manager shows up each day at 7:30 (start at 9) and leaves at 7/7:30
>3 months pass, have my "probation period" hearing in the fucking kitchen because the office is an "Open space".
>"Well user, we're gonna extend your probation by a month, you do your work but you dont go beyond whats asked of you, John and Stacie always stay behind and go beyond what is asked of them"
>Decide to "step up" and take some work off John and Stacie
>Dumb fuck John's and dumb fuck stacies are behind on their work and have a backlog of about 2wks, easily sorted in 2days with some automation.
>1 month pass, "Well user, i am glad that we had that chat, we are pleased to offer you this postion but you seem to be finishing your work quite fast so we are gonna give you some more challenging tasks"
>Get extra work loads dumped that my script automates.....
>John and Stacie still stay behind ...
>7 months in now, i spend 2hours of my day doing the work i actually applied to do and the rest is handled by a fucking SCRIPT that anyone who has basic coding skills can made.
Why should i show commitment or "go the extra mile" if you never get shit in return. I live in the UK and the work culture here is awful.
People are expected to go above and beyond while everyone gets paid shit and the barriers to entry are so inflated. Work smart < Work hard.
I never understood that, i got shit to do at home,i got interests outside of work and at the end of the day its not even about the money.
I make the "living wage" for London which is fucking shit because i spend 50% of it on rent since rent is inflated here, i would like more cash but i'd also like to not fucking work 8 hours a day on shit thats boring.
Its about fufilment, 90% of jobs are just bland and shallow, they add no value, its just a constant grind without an end.
Why should i be commited to something when i get 0 commitment in return? >
>Loyalty
>Modern workforce
If companies wanted employees to be loyal they shouldn't have spent the last 40 years outsourcing jobs and fighting tooth and nail against any profit sharing or benefits increase.
Current workforce protocol is to get a job, and then use that job to leverage offers for better jobs.
The only way to succeed is if you hop around like this getting experience and higher pay with each hop.
If they didn't want it to be like this then they should have invested the time and money into making their employees want to stay at the business.
I work in maintenance, but I get paid hourly so when I am asked to com in and fix something I at least get overtime for it.
>Why should i show commitment or "go the extra mile" if you never get shit in return.
The story of the modern world.
Ted Kaczynski looks more and more based as time goes on.
(Except for the bombing semi-random people thing... but that's a relatively minor issue in the grand philosophical scheme of things)
The funny thing is that in most (non-service) jobs the 40 hour work week is a relic of the past. People should be paid salary to hit certain benchmarks that are realistic. If that takes 20 hours or 100 hours a week it should be irrelevant. Most people waste a large part of the day on time-wasting meetings, or busywork to justify their paycheck. I took over as manager of an office where employees getting paid almost $30 an hour to do bullshit stuff like wash dishes or mop the floors just to justify their existence (in my presence, so I bet they'd just be on faceberg if I weren't)...
With the associates and corporate's agreement, I put the entire office on "part time" with huge bonuses for productivity and hired a housekeeper that got paid $12 an hour with health benefits (we still saved money). We need to change this moronic mentality of having associates dedicate their entire lives to a fucking job, and management needs to pull their heads out of their asses... a job is just a job, not slavelike dedication to a soulless entity.
>People should be paid salary to hit certain benchmarks that are realistic.
Yes.
>Most people waste a large part of the day on time-wasting meetings, or busywork to justify their paycheck.
It's like literally the NPC meme. Like they do it that way just because they're supposed to and perhaps have never taken a serious look at doing it any other way.
Granted, it's easy to become demotivated and such or to think you have no power to change things, but when you are in a position of authority then surely there are much better things that can be tried.
>With the associates and corporate's agreement, I put the entire office on "part time" with huge bonuses for productivity and hired a housekeeper that got paid $12 an hour with health benefits (we still saved money).
Egsellend.
Unironically helping to save the world 1 office at a time.
That's my dream, landing a job and realizing i just can automate it with python without nobody noticing it, and then playing all day with my cellphone meanwhile i get paid doing nothing
That's exactly what happened. My dad is a boomer that bought a 300 square feet house in his twenties and he is shocked that I don't wageslave 24/7.
Get real. I won't waste my twenties Wageslaving if I'm gonna afford the house I want at 50.
That's the millennial dilemma. They want to enjoy life as long as possible and do the minimum effort because they feel than in relative terms with previous generations their efforts will be worth shit
They're rare, but good jobs are out there. Get the fuck out of there asap.
its actually quite depressing because you realise that your voice is just a whisper in a rave.
Its honestly boring...you have to "Prove yourself "to move up.
>thats life
>heh you have to earn your place
>gotta show some passion and effort
nah fuck off, capitalism is productivity==efficiency not a constant shit show.
You gotta really drive home how good you are mate.
Just dazzle them. Show them how much of your work you have been able to make that script do. Show them how much time it otherwise would take had you not been automating it. Convert that to dollars and cents, and show them how much better their bottom line is because of you.
Then, threaten to leave if you are not valued like you should be and given a pay increase based on a percentage of the money you save them.
Always frame shit for the person you are talking to, if they are a person managing a company, the likely thing is that they care most about how much money they are spending to employ you and what benefit that is having.
Show them.
Also, never talk shit on your peers to your boss. Makes you seem weak for trying to put focus on others.
The problem is that America is beginning to look like Japan before the Great Deflation. Instead of people working hard to be compensated well, we're mostly pretending to work but putting in long soul-crushing hours and on top of that go to moronic corporate social gatherings just to look like a "team player". While upper management live like feudal lords, asking why the serfs aren't breaking their backs even harder for them.
I am, been applying for some grad schemes but according to some of my mates who are 1 year in, most grad schemes are meat grinders.
Accounting at deloitte = moving papers from stack A to stack B
DLG grad scheme = 2 years of being someones PA
KPMG = What the fuck am i doing with my life and why do i leave at 9pm
Been looking at BAT and JapInt outside europe because fuck paying so much in taxes and then spending 30/50% of my wage on a shitty house. Eastern europe,Asia/Latin America seem like good choices.
>being this fucking retarded
>thinking a joke 1800s Southerner complaining is real
Please kill yourself and rid this world of 0.0001% of the stupid population.
>Then, threaten to leave if you are not valued like you should be and given a pay increase based on a percentage of the money you save them.
"You weren't being paid to be lazy user. Did you develop that tool on company time? It's company property then."
The situation you're describing is an ideal. It's the way things should work but often don't.
Remember how the best way to get a raise is to job hop? On what fucking planet is it in the best interest of a business to operate that way?
I'm like OP and asked for a raise today
Was told to fuck right off
I've seen the light
I did at first, i was actually caught in the cog game. I thought that if i do a good job like a good little boy i'd get a treat. Its an endless carrot on a stick game. After several emails and continual broken promises of "offline" talks
I realise thats its probably not worth mentioning that by implementing 150 lines of code they can save roughly £176k a year by sacking 8 people... (assuming everyone is on the same salary as me in my position)
Which means moving around the fucking country also. How the shit are you supposed to do this while at the same time maintaining a relationship (harder to move when partner ALSO has to find a job where moving to), and start a family?
Boomer grandparents and parents live in the same small village they were born in. Worked usually at a single company.
Now we're expected to update CVs, dealing with HR / recruitment wankers, and going to interviews to beg every couple of years.
What rages me is that most jobs now don't even advertise the fucking salary, just say "competitive" or "excellent". Like WTF how the shit am I supposed to know whether "excellent" will feed my kids, or myself? Such a waste of fucking time.
Imagine being as out of touch with reality as the guy you just replied to. lmao. Good on you, wish I was better at coding, reading some books on it, gettin better little by little but don’t ever push myself. Hope I can change that soon.
>Which means moving around the fucking country also. How the shit are you supposed to do this while at the same time maintaining a relationship (harder to move when partner ALSO has to find a job where moving to), and start a family?
You're... not! :-DDD
But point out the obvious and you're a conspiracy theorists. Corporations would never be corrupt. Just because the better-funded candidate wins elections 91% of the time, and the money to win elections comes from corporations, does not mean that elections are effectively predetermined and the world is run by corporate entities in a manner not unlike those from the vidja game Syndicate.
Nope.
I fucking swear, it's like many people have something in their head where there are certain ideas they are simply unwilling to accept could ever be possible regardless of the evidence presented. Like they're emotionally unwilling to accept that things could ever be worse than X because somehow the universe is magically self-balancing and humanity could never be run in an unsustainable manner that does not work.
ZOOMERS RISE UP
(Because Gen Y is too tired right now, k)
>What rages me is that most jobs now don't even advertise the fucking salary, just say "competitive" or "excellent". Like WTF how the shit am I supposed to know whether "excellent" will feed my kids, or myself? Such a waste of fucking time.
At least you get to be a Jedi/Ninja/Faggit :-DDD
brb not even a real or properly-defined job.
If they pay overtime then sure. Otherwise it's another Telltale Games situation
Did this in an internship although I told my bosses about it in order to leverage interest in hiring me and they encouraged it. I was still expected to sit in my cube 8hrs a day though and look busy which fucking sucked. Two hour commute at rush hour, 20 minutes any other time no bullshit. Since all code in theory would have had to go through so many channels to be approved for use. My loophole was using vba in excel. Since recording macros was cool, writing my own was somehow fine. At this point I could probably build bitcoin in excel
its so fucking sad that most offices are beginning to catch up on VBA and SQL. Companies still use BlackPrince2.
Honestly, every industry apart from tech is shit simply due to how out of date and out of touch it is. Tech is always ahead because its constantly revolving and also talent is hard to come by.
But even solid roles where spec workers are rare or difficult to acquire are stuck using old practises.
fucking vba in 2018...
This user gets it.
>Work a job where I get paid by the hour
>Been taking paid lunches for the last 3 years
>Putting 70% of my money in index funds and telling nobody
I know the day is coming when they put me on (((salary))) and expect me to work 50+ hours per week while getting paid for 40. I want to be able to walk away on that day.
OF COURSE MASTER
>Do a job quickly and efficiently
>Get given more work
I learnt this long ago. I hand in every piece of vital work exactly on time, and every piece of non-vital work slightly after the deadline. I get praised for hard work and my boss apologises to me as "I see you handing in work late, sorry for working you so hard"
I got a 20% payrise when some busybody has been haggling onver a 7% payrise and he does like double me
I wanna learn vba and SQL what to do
Fun fact.
If you don’t work for yourself or have dinner with the business owner you work for on occasion. Your going to get fucked one day. Without lube.
I was always just the go along young guy in the corporation. But twice the department got laid off.
Of course I didn’t give a shit because I always surfed the internet and went on really long lunches and should have been fired.
But both time they laid off my boss and all the loyal workers who had been there more than 10 years... My boss was in tears.
And it was never because of our departments performance. It’s because they just wanted to outsource.
The second time it happened I realized I should just become a contractor and star my own business.
I work more but I fucking can’t fire myself.
As someone in public accounting, I absolutely laugh at people who think working over 40 hours is a lot. During busy season, (January-March), we are required to work AT LEAST 55 hours (usually around 80 hours). This is absolutely nothing. Anyone who complains about working 40 hours is a little baby.
>complaining about working long hours
>only really works 3 months the whole year
fuck off CuckPA
Similar to my situation. Months away for me most likely. Best of luck user
We work those hours throughout the year. I'm just talking about when it's actually mandated. I guarantee you that I work significantly more hours than you do.
CPAs are hilarious, your whole job will be done by an algorithm (or two) in less than five years, like literally why even bother.
bloomberg.com
And yes, I know that the point of auditing is more often making qualitative judgment calls about where to place things - too bad that's a basic optimization/dynamic programming problem that algorithms are also good at.
Working long hours isn't something to brag about moron. It means you are inefficient and/or are part of a terribly run firm.
This was 2015 but yeah. I literally automated to the point where they started letting people go, which I feel kinda bad about considering I turned down their job offer. That excel file has got to be at least a gigabyte in size by now, which I also kinda feel bad about. Hope they copy and pasted the template each month like I told them to.
Says the NEET. That's not even remotely close to what we do as auditors, tax consultants, and M&A analysts. If CPAs were automated in 5 years, then nearly every single job would be automated by then as well.
No inefficiencies, retard. CPA firms work you to the bone.
Just learn how to use Alteryx and program in Python.
>terribly run firm
I guess I won't argue with that. I hate my firm.
yup
>I was still expected to sit in my cube 8hrs a day though and look busy
when HR has their heads up their ass
Depends on the compensation and availability of resources. Being so skilled or specialized that you could work double hour weeks isnt terribly lame at all, but being forced to usually is. I've worked a 20+ hour day before, the circumstances and cuckoldry involved are so embarassing that I havent told anyone about it until now.
SQL can be learned in a few hours, efficient sql takes experience with large databases. Baby steps but don't form bad habits.
Vba for excel, edit some recorded macros if v new to programming and see if you want to deal with it. Then go learn java or another language and come back to it. Dont learn to program in vba, it will taint the mind (although it's good enough if you are 10 and just learning to code in visual studio). Otherwise just have patience and keep your research task oriented. Many have died of boredom reading vba docs & pajeet blogs telling you how to turn rows into columns the wrong way
I love threads like this because it makes me appreciate the perfect tech job I have. Sometimes I go to different departments and keep tabs on their machines, sometimes I'm at my cube, sometimes I'm replacing stuff, but my hours are just that, mine. And because I'm always reliable my boss lets me just do what I want to do. I go in at 7ish and leave some time before 3. Never more. And I pace my own work out and I don't have any deadlines I don't give myself.
Holy shit this has to be a troll.
I like my job as a professor, and there is very little time that I am not, in one way or another, doing something related to my profession. Even shitposting on Jow Forums has a connection. I like my life, and I pity people who see their work as slavery.
kys
what classes do you teach? one of my former professors is into crypto
you gotta make an AI that does the 2 hour job
then you should shadow work, everything is always ready like you're a magician
never reveal your secret, treat it as if you were the best at it in the world but seemingly oblivious to it.
they'll think they struck gold hiring you lmao
You aren't a tool to be used by your employer. Your employer is a tool to be used by you. I make shit wages where I'm working but I'm also learning to repair phones which is a new skill. If you have to work for shit wages find a job that teaches you something you can use to make money. It's like getting paid to go to school.
I feel the same way as a new grad working as a developer. I enjoy this stuff and the only real downside is that I can't choose my own projects. Everything else is fantastic
I'm in a European philology department, and I teach courses in philosophy, writing, linguistics, and pedagogy.
Yeah I feel the sameway as a geologist work can be thrilling especially if you're on the cusp of finding something big
