How true is the meme that in communism no one wants to become a doctor because they get paid the same as everyone else? Was there actually a doctor shortage in the Warsaw Pact countries?

It isn't strictly true because even in communist nations people will trade extra services and goods to get around the system. Communism countries have a massive fucking black market problem.

The biggest problem though is a lack of willing workers. Anyone who thinks communism or socialism can work in a diverse society is a giant fucking retard. They require either social trust or national pride which most Western nations no longer have. So it will inevitably become a game of work or a shoot you instead of work or you die of starvation.

Obviously a meme, they did earn more but not by much. The few self-employed that worked without salary have always made more than any salary (except for party members of course). Check out Cuba.

And basically this, it's widely known in Cuba that even taxi drivers make infinitely more than a doctor makes.

There wasn't that much of a shortage cause for high demand essential roles like that they were given extra perks by the government for existing and traded priory of patients for under the table goods and services on an individual level. Effectively what said capitalistic supply/demand still existed and still 'exploited' those without fungible assets except there was a hypothetical 'free' system for patients to participate in if they didn't mind waiting forever and receive a shitty service compared to those who bribed doctors.

Connor Rogers

this is already happening in the US

programmers make less than meme project analysts/managers who just write emails and make excel spreadsheets all day

hell, my brother and i worked at the same company. i was a programmer, he was a meme analyst. he wrote emails and spreadsheets, and met with others all day, i did all of that except spreadsheets but ALSO programming. i literally built the platform that him and everyone else in the office was using. but we had the same salary.

so why the fuck would i continue to exert myself for the same pay as someone with unskilled labor?

there was another thread on here about mechanical engineers and waiters making the same amount of money. why.

i've since quite my last programming job and am focusing on my budding career as a grocery bagger.

This has been discussed on /r/socialism and /r/anarchism a lot. The answer is that yes, many would still become doctors. Many doctors choose their profession out of genuine care for humanity. Cuba has world class doctors and they certainly don't do it for the money.

Nathaniel Butler

Threadly reminder that there is a shortage of doctors in the United States and this is intentionally done by the American Medical Association through limiting the number of accredited degrees to keep salaries and costs high for medical professions. Thank you capitalism.

They weren't "free market capitalists", but no one ever has been, that's just a meme dreamt up by neckbeard incel ancaps still yet to leave their cum stained computer chairs for the first time this week.

They did on the other hand still operate under the framework of a capitalist economy - they in fact re-privatised many industries that were taken control of by the state during the later days of the Weimar Republic, at a time when even the US was not re-privatising much post depression.

Private firms in Nazi Germany had lots of scope to control their own investment and production decisions, even though there was regulation and oversight by the state (like there is in every country).

Yeah they had some nationalised welfare programs etc, but again so does every capitalist country. None of that shit makes one non-capitalist.

Nazis did not eliminate private property. Therefore they were still capitalist, just not "free market herp dep capitalist" (which no one ever has been), and certainly the fuck not socialist.

Try Hungaria, Slovakia or tchek republic.

On the contrary our "free" capitalist countries are completely fucked from an ethnic point of view.

Poland likes to whine about the iron curtain, but they are still >95% white. They should try GB or France to enjoy the joys of "diversity". Let them think that it wasn't so bad compared to the great replacement.

I think you are projecting.

Nazi Germany definitely was capitalist.

Since you don't exactly grasp what capitalism is, and sadly you are not alone, i'll help you.

Definition from Cambridge dictionary of Capitalism:

an economic, political, and social system in which property, business, and industry are privately owned, directed towards making the greatest possible profits for successful organizations and people

So Nazi Germany is definitively capitalist.

There has yet to be a non capitalist society period.

Landon Myers

You definitively haven't been recently to Slovkia, Tchek republic or Hungary.

Those countries today are clean, have an healthy economy and are whites.

The reason is that USSR didn't have a mass migration policy when GB, France and Germany were already organizing mass migration in the 1980s in order to dump wages and replace whites.

yes you faggot well done. there has not been a fundamentally non-capitalist society seen on a large scale ever, the only examples that exist are small communes like the anarchist spanish colonies during the civil war, free territories of ukraine etc where industry was truly taken control of by the workers and managed democratically

of course the fucking USSR wasn't socialist. the bolshevik revolution swiftly destroyed the factory councils and workers democracy that briefly existed prior to it, and even lenin in his writings openly discussed how they had abandoned the principles of socialism and were following a form of statist capitalism

Marx isn't the only communist author. In any case Communism manifesto is very basic because it was quickly written to be understandable by the average middle 18th century worker. The capital is far better.

I still haven't read all of Marx's writting but i understand he was a socialist, not a communist.

In the end of his life, in Critique of the Gotha Programme, he was more in favor of abolition of money.

Asher Sanchez

Austin Bennett

Yeah apparently the definition of capitalism is by your standards actually every society outside of
primitive tribes
(Which I'd say definitely have a class and sometimes caste system what with the whole chieftain/elder system not very marxist)
and
revolutionary Catalonia
"Trade union control also spread to small businesses of the middle class handicraft men and tradesmen. In Barcelona, the CNT collectivized the sale of fish and eggs, slaughterhouses, milk processing and the fruit and vegetable markets, suppressing all dealers and sellers that were not part of the collective. Many retailers joined the collectives but others refused, wanting higher wages than the workers.[12] "
en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Revolutionary_Catalonia
Which apparently also by its own accord still had some lingering privite property so their goes your purity
And I'm sorry if your definition of what is capitalist is quite literally everything then that's a useless definition that provides no distinction. If in your system of judgement both the USSR and Nazi Germany were in fact the exact same government type. That's fine, but contributes nothing to the discussion of centralist leaning markets to free leaning markets that we were having over actual real world countries and not imaginary figments that cease to exist after a matter of minutes when applied to the meat world.

Jayden Long
Jayden Long

It's basically a meme from people who have literally zero understanding of psychology. Most people choose a profession that fits their personality the best, not that which pays the most. I'd rather be a doctor than a janitor even if they paid the same.

My father grew up in Communist Poland till he emigrated to the US in 1981, he was born in the mid 50s. He has a Masters in electrical engineering with the idea of becoming a high school teacher. He grew up on a tiny farm where they loved like 15th century peasants (no electricity, well for water, etc). So moving up in society was possible, that's a type of American dream situation. There was not really a shortage of willing people, more a shortage of able people. The Soviets valued math and science very highly so to get into those universities you had to have a brain. Also there were other reasons to stay in school and aim for high degrees, such as avoiding the draft into the Army. Yes the offical pay for highly respected jobs like that was low, but in a society where everyone is forced to be equal, the prestige/social status of one's job held great value to a man. Also, the barter system for food and goods was very much in place and active during that time, and lawyers didn't perform their services pro bono.

Also billionaires vs NEETs.

NEETs don't want to work even if they have basically nothing where as billionaires keep working even after they are already rich and could easily retire because they like working. It's not about the money really, it's about whether you find a job you like doing or not.

Luis Sanders
Luis Sanders

Also something my dad talked about was Communism gives this great sense of overwhelming depression. Communism is a type of government where whatever you do, basically doesn't matter how well or badly you do it, you get rewarded the same. There is no way to move up from that. The rest of your life is predetermined. There's no incentive to try harder, so people don't. And so you have people stagnating, basically wondering what's the point of living if this is as good as it gets. People are like machines. Because of this thought process, Many Eastern Europeans don't know how to save money well because they grew up in a society where they didn't have to worry about hard times or manage good times. They knew they would get something enough to survive on (not comfortably) and that's it.
But Even in war time, they always need doctors, lawyers, engineers, and other high titles. You'll be alright unless society has collapsed totally and you now need to live like a 15th century peasant.

I was questioning it at first but now I'm certain. You have no idea what you are talking about. Communism under no definition implies a moneyless society. Some communist might have advocated for it but that is neither here nor there. Communism is quite simply the collective ownership of property and by the organization of labor for the common advantage of all members. That's it. Nothing more. Anything additional is 19th century utopian sprinkles.
