Proof of Work applied to actual computational expensive but useful applications would be awesome. Imagine if btc miners were simulating molecules for curing deseases, or helping SETI. But it would be almost impossible to evaluate work quality. Pity those alts that claim to follow the above philosophy are scams with no actual content.

So, that doesn't mean it's a bad way to distribute the coins. There's more energy being spent on other types of energy outputs than mining Bitcoin. Energy is the unit of the universe. Deal with it. I think we need to improve how mining operations are run. Proof of Stake will reward those who stake more and can be very unfair.

pos has problems but not with fairness

When airdropped tokens get staked, that is unfair. Proof of work is proof of work. Proof of doing something. Mining operations just need to improve by less electricity and improving how the programming uses the electricity used to mine. Wondering why Elon hasn't thought about setting up space mining rigs. There could be underwater mining operations. It's not that big of a problem. Both PoW and PoS have their pros and cons. Hybrid dPoW and NiPoPoW is interesting.

the algorithm must work like this: value created = cost to secure. so since there are 144 block rewards per day with 12.5 bitcoins each the mining cost per day should be around 7.2 mil. if mining cost is much lower than the reward than the network isn't secure. also very few coins where airdropped
