Wildly depends on tone, words and context. I've met numerous girls at my uni who've told me that they wish men at parties, bars or even fucking bus stops would compliment them more if they felt like they've outdone themselves on that day with their clothes/make up. Yet I'd imagen they'd retrafct does statements if they're fucking grocery shopping and some work-suit wearing grease-boi started hollering at them when they were just getting fucking milk. It's not that they don't like being complimented, it's that they just want to be left the fuck alone like anyone else would.
