Maintaining the machines requires much less workforce which can be controlled within reason. Not every worker is the same, but barriers can make the workforce homogenous enough for it to not be such a big deal.

Somalians and Syrians, yes. Sweden's welfare system was built for a population half the size of the current one. It's failing now, but I think it was a good idea overall.
Especially when it comes to education. We are in dire need of higher educated people for future work. The typical labour is probably going to be replaced by automation relatively soon and you can't have an unemployment rate of >15% with the youth indebted due to having to pay for the education necessary for the remaining jobs.
It makes sense to me that the gubment fund that education via taxes so people can have jobs and productivity maintain a reasonable level.
