I think the right thing to ask is how amazon got here. Is amazon a natural monopoly like old ATT that just won when the market was being created? Or is the barrier to entry really high but not impossible to pass? If one of our guys just needs to make a legal alternative and market it that’s different than a natural monopoly. I sell $2m/year on Amazon. I have web stores, too. Trust me, Amazon will not end the way you think it will. It will basically be the same as it is now, but all the prices will be msrp. Web stores will always be around and the masses will soon move back to them and avoid Amazon.

Amazon provides small businesses access to a customer base they simply wouldn't otherwise get. Consumer wins because he gets exposed to all options. Amazon is great. Can't say the same for Bezos or for how he manages people and want to own the whole world. Not all monopolies are bad.

And no, it is not a form of communism through market forces. Communism would have a single, "intelligently designed" organism which would suck and would never be able to fire anybody. Amazon as a firm developed over decades, competing against everybody from ebay to overstock to barnes n noble to walmart. This forced it to change and refine itself until an efficiency was achieved that could never have been "intelligently designed" from the beginning, even by a perfect genius.

I've noticed Amazon's quality has been going down the last couple years. Lots of tech stuff are bootleg. MicroSd cards, phone chargers, console controllers and so many more. These things are even Amazon verified. I have had a couple packages get "lost" with their new Amazon carrier (basically amazon uber). I've been moving away from Amazon. The thing that is nice anout Amazon is their catalogue system. Sometimes I use Amazon to find a product then I go to another website to buy it. Kind of like how I use to go to brick n mortar to check a product out then go buy on Amazon. What's nice about our market is companies have to keep up with the compitition or they will get behind and loose. Amazon drove a lot of brick n mortar out of business but that caused brick n mortar to up their game. Amazon atm are trying to be more than what they are and it will hurt them. Companies that keep on expanding and forget what made them hold the number 1 title. I wonder how the new ruling with online taxes are going to effect them too in the long run.

I run a small business. I usually get multiple quotes. Talk to the supply house and show them the competing qoute. Most of the time the supply house will match the competition. I always tell them I want to support their business cause they are local. They appreciate that. Sometimes though they can not meet. And wonder how the fuck some online competitors are pricing so low.
