I've known a few people who OD'd. they were not friends, only acquaintances. I think of them from time to time, but only in a cautionary sense. They did it to themselves.

No I don’t think that is true. One of the guys I was in a band with (he was the drummer) died of a drug overdose. In all of my life he is the single best drummer I have ever heard. Better than anyone famous I have ever heard. He was extremely intelligent. He had the world in the palm of his hands and could have done anything he wanted to. He was kind. But he was unhappy because of the life he was brought into. Music was his outlet. But he fell for the meme that drugs make you more creative. So he tried all of them and when he tried heroin once he became addicted to it. He couldn’t stop. He tried but always fell off the wagon and ended up using again. When he died he left a three month old baby and his girl and his friends and family. This was years ago and I still think about him every day. It was an honor and a privilege to have made music with you Derek. Love you man. Wherever you are.
