Interesting framing. If someone believes that he is a genius, he wants democracy because he thinks he will make a correct political choice. If someone is more conscious about himself, he understands that there may be aspects he is not competent in, so it is better for someone smarter to be in charge.

I experience my being and not theirs. Their rights are nothing to me compared with my ultimate right to self-advocacy and self-interest.
