Industrial production increased from the British period but was capped by the government to make sure the private companies don't earn much.

It wasn't until 1991 that the Soviet Union collapsed and so did our economy since most of our imports were from the SS. Even after that, India still had a lot of red tape towards foreign companies.

And the Union Carbide incident in 1984, for example, where the Indian government went after the American owners of the company. Soon all American companies became suspicious of going to India, because if anything went wrong the government would charge them with consequences. Contrast this to China where foreign companies are free to do whatever they want and if anything goes wrong it's usually put on the Chinese officials serving in the company, not the owners themselves.

The British didn't just land into India and say, "Well, we're ruling India now". Read up on Thomas Roe's deals with Jahangir in the Mughal Court.
