I'm an American living back and forth between Europe and the US. When I'm here in Europe I miss the space I have in the US, and that includes having my big, spacious American car without having to deal with public transport. Just a very American mindset. Don't know how you change that without forcing it on people.

America meanwhile have little to nothing worthwhile in most of its continental landmass thus making high speed rail nationwide is a huge waste of resources. This is why America chose to greatly expand their national flight infrastructure instead of trains. Also we prefer to drive cars for moderate-length trips.

They were blatantly built for political reasons (send a message to the separatists that "we control you").
