If you're honestly trying to ask what causes someone to become transgender then you are obviously asking the wrong questions. Transgenderism isn't a mental illness but a refusal to acknowledge typical gender roles (i.e. men are strong, muscular, masculine, breadwinners, etc while women are meek, fragile, feminine, subservient, etc). These are things that are indeed social constructs that people have established through culture over time. Transgenderism is basically a big 'fuck you' to these established social norms and mores.
If you're conflating transsexualism and transgenderism then that's another topic altogether. The sex of a person is dictated by their sexual organs (penis or vagene). Transsexuals want to literally become the opposite sex. Someone who is transgender doesn't (usually, unless they suffer from body dismorphic disorder). Body dismorphic disorder is indeed a mental illness, which is what transsexuals suffer from.
But in a nutshell it is all very gay.
