It’s really not a bad place to live if you’re from The North Ohio River Valley from Wheeling, WV to Pittsburgh,PA. It’s small town USA culture with very normalized drug abuse, in major cities it’s common place to find needles on the ground, but you wouldn’t be judged for smoking and drinking outside except maybe in Wheeling. Most of the cities except for Pittsburgh are in complete shambles of their former glory from the steel mill days. The culture here is very good and white for the most part, our economy is just in the shittier for rn until these oil wells start to really bring in money.

Pittsburgh, the location of the most recent holocaust, has been called the "Paris of Appalachia." The city is certainly on the border of the region, but cannot be indicative of the areas deeper in. However, I have family south of the city, and clearly within Appalachia proper. I grew up there before moving with my mom to the (((city))).
Visiting now, I can tell you things aren't well. Once again, it's a large geographic region, but southern PA is a mix of coal-burners and wannabe Confederates. I have no problem with Dixie LARPers, but most people there are uneducated or just plain dumb. I hate talking bad about whites, but I want to be objective. The infrastructure is crumbling throughout the state (and country), the demographics are getting worse every generation, the education is a joke, economy is just tradespeople fixing each other's stuff, Walmart employees, and the occasional trucker.
It's a sad state of affairs, but alas, it's what it is. I am torn between staying here, or going to ancestral lands in eastern Europe. My family hasn't been here long (post 1900), and were pretty much all coal miners. I'm leaning towards leaving because no one actually wants to fix anything

Interstate 68 is beautiful. Cumberland looks nice nestled in the hills. I was amazed by it the first time I drove through it. Then later on I read how it's not a good place to live. It's a shame, there are so many beautiful places in this country that are terrible places live. I live next door in WV and we have the same thing going on.
