Nationalism is nonsensical. It attributes too much importance to nationality, because it's main aim is national homogenization, which is why nationalists stress assimilation, integration and nation states, which are all utopian and overly static views on reality.
It's even bad to look at the world and politics from the perspective of states. Politics is done by parties, one or another. In the past you had this monarch or this aristocrat, now you have this association and this businessman.
So any wishes and declarations about nation states are beyond realistic reach, they're simply futile and overly static, whereas politics is flexible and liquid. You might wish to limit immigration, but you can't declare a nation state, as all of Europe shows. Your wishes and declarations are simply powerless.
Think about the so called "national" industry or banking. Why would you think of big business as part of your nationality, when in reality, they're cosmopolitan people, even though formally they're of the same nationality as you? So why do you care if your bank is jewish or french, or german?
If the elites of my country were nationalistic, then it would be long long ago squeezed by Germany and Russia, because any closer association with non-Poles would be forbidden, so we wouldn't have a union with Lithuania. Nationalists would bring doom to the country and condemn it to become a smaller and weaker state than it is right now. That would be just against any rules of pragmatism and common sense.
Lots of useful things are nonsensical. Though, its really funny to see you pigeonhole nationalism as nonsensical but then depict nationalists as turbo-autists who would never consort with people from other nations. Talk about nonsense!

It failed because it was decentralised and had too much democracy, not because of multiculturalism, while all the other states were absolute monarchies. Russia was even more multiethnic/multicultural, but it survived and won.
