– A plane carrying Gov. Ron DeSantis, Attorney General Ashley Moody and four staffers experienced “mechanical issues” and made a pit stop in St. Petersburg on Friday as the new governor made his way to Fort Lauderdale.
DeSantis was traveling for a scheduled 3 p.m. press conference where he is expected to announce the suspension of Broward County Sheriff Scott Israel, but the delay pushed the event to 4:30 p.m.
“A mechanical issue forced the plane to divert over to St. Petersburg,” said DeSantis spokesman David Vasquez. “Everyone is safe.”
The plane is owned by the Florida Department of Law Enforcement, which received the aircraft after it was seized as part of a drug bust. It’s unclear how many times it’s been in recent use. A log of the plane was not immediately available.
DeSantis, though, began using the plane to get around the state after he was sworn in Tuesday. He travelled to Mexico Beach in the Panhandle on Wednesday to view Hurricane Michael damage, then jetted to Miami to name his first Florida Supreme Court justice appointment.
DeSantis’ predecessor, Rick Scott, famously sold two state planes when he came into office in 2011. The multi-millionaire used his own plane to travel the state, but it’s no longer an option for DeSantis.
