It wasn't until the Allies cut off supplies to the Nazis, that prisoners started to die, which was due to disease outbreaks like Typhus spread by lice. In fact that's what those "gas chambers" were actually intended for: to delouse the prisoners using Zyklon B, keeping the disease from spreading.

I would say it was worse than our internment camps. But yeah, the cause of thousands of prisoner deaths was simple neglect, and it was poorly conceived. Hitler did obviously have an anti Jew agenda, but I dont think it was deliberate genocide, although many who ran the camps probably did take some glee in starving and beating them to death.

Their collection of effective traits in survival is a product of cultural evolution.
