Nostalgia aside, I feel as though the USA today is a different country entirely from the past 200 years of our existence. Like the dichotomy between the early Imperial and Late Imperial Rome. Same nation, two vastly different cultures.
How can the nation that my father grew up in, the stories he told, the pictures I see from back then, be so different from the experience today? Is it really just the internet? Social media? Or is it something more nefarious?
I feel as though the USA of 30-49 years ago was closer to the USA of 150 years ago than we are to even 20 years ago.

A bunch of jewish communists took over the course of a century or so. They now control all media, academia, finance, the legal system, and both political parties. They are slowly pushing the same policies that they pushed in the Wiemar (the idea being that the goyim might not notice if they play the long game--think of boiling the frog). I think the turning point was probably LBJ in the `60s. The democrats made government subsidy of dependency a fixture of American government. The USA has changed fundamentally several times in its history. The first major change during the Civil War, because in the post Civil War Era, after the south lost, the federal government has grown in power and influence ever since. The next major change was in the early 20th century. Between the creation of the federal reserve and the end of World War two. Fractional reserve banking, the welfare state and the military industrial complex were all directly a result of that period of time. Currently, we're going through another shift. I'm not sure how it will all end, but it's changing. We're living in the last days of the old paradigm (the one we saw in the "utopia" of the 50's). I see some kind of world order, a kind of financial technocracy; essentially what the cyber punk genre has been warning us to avoid.

This will cause deep alienation between smart phone users and the steadily shrinking class of people who don't use the technology yet.
Don't be fooled by the ability of the smart phone to track your every movement and communication/search. While it can be turned on you quickly, it can also help you locate anyone and anything you wish to visit and suggest multiple routes to the destination. (This is going to be fucking bananas when people start killing each other over politics. Imagine all the niggers who want to fuck up the three top Democrats in Virginia right now.) It won't matter much after the fact that the killers were found. It will matter a lot more that they were able to locate their targets on their smart phone. They can also memorize the maps and leave their phones home while they go hunting in a particular area.
In the pre smart phone era, it was not easy to locate a political rival. That has changed.
