it is a play on the aspect of coloreds saying white people are appropriating cultural aspects of differing cultures and that is bad
the retort they are making is that blacks do it too
thus there is a paradox or fallacy in the logic of the original argument being presented
a hypocritical mode of thinking

now, as for this argument you make about "looking ethnic," one could argue that if you dont take into account what drives trends in attractiveness and beauty
much of what beauty is derived from is both money and leisure
having money is good, but working all the time with it leaves one without substance or personal growth
having too much leisure leaves one without the ability to better ones appearance in goods, services, or ability to move and navigate the social landscape
as a result, the current trend of tanning, conveys the two criteria of money and leisure by being able to go out doors and in places where the sun is plentiful and suitable for exposure
not working all the time and having the ability to go outside, while also being in places that provide this ability through wealth and leisure.
this is just one example, being physically fit and thin shows wealth and leisure time in the ability to eat well and go to the gym / outside thus being tan

in Renaissance times, beauty in women was portrayed through weight, chubbiness, actually. This translates to the wealth / leisure as people who had money could eat and get fat because of the poor diets and harsh working conditions of the time
this information i learned in the 8th - 10th grade in american public schools, if you think everything is a jewish trick or racist in undertones, you negate actual logic, history, or social understanding of the world around you
