- Biggest reason: the elderly have hogged all the "easy positions", School Superintendents are almost always age 50+, College Deans and Provosts are almost always age 55+, they're all making $150k or more a year and they simply just drive up the cost of tuition and charge you whatever they feel like.... drive down to your local City/Town Hall some morning and see who is sitting in the Tax Clerk office, the Engineering office, Health Inspector office, Building Code... it's all full of fat women aged 55 and older... they are clogging up the system and refuse to get out, they answer to nobody and they create rules and policies as they wish

- ... and these elderly people have made it impossible to compete with them, to become a CPA now you need 150 Credits, pass four 4-hour national tests, pass State Ethics test, and you need up to 2 years of experience in some states.... 40 years ago you only needed a regular college degree and just pass 1 test... the elderly have kept raising the bar for qualifications making it more difficult and more expensive to compete with the elderly - since the elderly are all grandfathered in through rules/regulations that were effective back in the 1970s/1980s, it's an unfair level playing field, where the old guy only had to jump over a 2-foot bar but the young guy now has to jump over a 4-foot bar

Graduated in 08 with a BSc Biochemistry, but taking biochem classes 2 years later at local college? That makes no sense at all.

Need an MSc at very least, more likely a PhD to really succeed in that field. A bachelor's degree is entry level here, with the expectation that you will keep going, else you be a low level lab grunt forever. There's very little money to be had for that very difficult degree.

I graduated high school in 2008 and entered the workforce after being kicked out by my alcoholic parents. I was poor for several years as I got my shit together and learned how to market myself - eventually I started my own business. Now, 11 years later, I have a family, a house, and new cars.

Most of my friends from childhood went to college and are stuck in our hometown making 40k/yr.

My co-worker had to work for fucking Amazon as a truck driver for months after getting his master's in Mech Eng, just to end up doing consultant work for Boeing that isn't even engineering related, but it pays decently.

You can't stick to any specific road map of career development when you are inexperienced and fresh out of college. And giving up after three months is a pussy way out. Even after all this is said, I do still wish there could be a government initiative to get new graduates into entry level positions, so they wouldn't have to solely rely on an unforgiving free-market solution to just get a fucking first job that probably wont pay that well.

PhD is a liability unless you're able to 1. Slot yourself into a research team; or 2. Have a clear pathway to tenure.
I don't know why this girl has a BA in Biochem (odd combination, but I've seen BA's with science minors/second majors before), but I think the fact that she struggles to find employment reflects less on her qualifications and more on the state of the field she's entering. Many of these tech/natsci fields don't see growth that correlates with population, they see growth that correlates with social attitudes, which are theoretically reflected in how much monetary value we attach to them.

Feel bad for her, also glad that I don't live in the USA, where being poor is seen as some sign of laziness or lack of intelligence - the reality is these are factors, but so are location, connections, education etc - factors tied to wealth, specifically wealth during upbringing.

I didn't notice the BA, just assumed it was BSc. I really have never heard of such a thing until now. Masters I'd fine here, but to make real money, make decisions, lead any real science you need a doctorate. It's a tough field; I loved the science of it all, but the reality of life in a coldroom, or cooking endless tasks like a chef wasn't for me.

The degree helped my resume for sure, but is almost completely irrelevant to what I do now. I really believe that university is a terrible choice for most people to make -- it certainly trains you for nothing in most cases.
