Because IBM encouraged outside developers to create programs for there system, the IBM PC quickly became popular because it had so many more programs available on it than Apple, Atari, etc.

People forget that he was one of the few back in the day that had a proper vision of what computers could turn into. When most people thought that PCs would be forever stuck in nerd basements and dry finance offices, Gates had a vision AND took the steps to turn that vision into a reality - for better or worse. Timing, execution, a handful or very good business decisions (bundling DOS with IBM PCs) is what separated him from other potentially equally smart people at e.g. Xerox labs etc.
