Oh, and our oldest metro line here in Athens was built in 1869, but it's faster than most NYC subway services. The only disadvantage is that half of the trains are full of graffiti on their exterior. But on their interior, all of the trains of line 1 are almost entirely clean at least.

1: Population Density. The lower the population density the less economical trains become. The United States is very large, with a widely distributed population, a large rural population and a relatively low population density.

2: We have cars. The automotive industry lobbied hard to shift the United States towards using cars and trucks and after the construction of the interstate system in the 50s we haven't really needed trains.
