Why do you consider gender dysphoria to be a mental illness?

Exact causes (like in most mental diseases) are still not well understood, sadly. There are many theories, though; my personal opinion is a not yet well understood hormonal unbalance that may manifest in altered dopamin expression and thus delusions but as I said, it's just my personal opinion
Good question: probably a combination of factors; society becoming less "restrictive", loss of tradional boundaries between sexes, femminization of the familiy nucleos, with more predominance by the mother who is made look like the strong sex and thus inspiring awe and admiration by the young impressionable mind (excuse the clusterfuck of words, my english is not very good)

DiD is extremely more rare than schizophrenia, I never personally saw one and most cases are people pretending (or some form of functional disease that makes them convinced of having multiple personalities); autism is still not very well understood and has many possible forms, it has have very little to do with the other two, it's not considered a mental disease per se but more a development disease, an anomaly in the way the brain grows

Of course there is, we don't give drugs without second thoughts: they are still badly understood but they work (somewhat); we usually start with the bare minimum dose and then scale up

As I said, we can't do very much because it's not ufficially considered a mental disorder anymore; usually it's suggested a long period of psychological treatment before even considering hormone therapy because up to 45% of patients change their mind during this phase. We all know what happens next and the less than ideal results it has the treatment.

I have not started yet but the way it works is its 4-6 years of med school, then two years of foundation (going to work as doctor without your official license) then further 5-8 years of speciality training depending on what speciality you want to do. in third it its much more focused around patient care and practical skills. My granddad changed sex, at the age of 65. He went from being a grumpy old bloke to wearing an alice band and flouncing around in a skirt. My grandmother was a very dominant woman, highly narcissistic and controlling. Our whole family thought it was mental illness. I think it was a type of split in his psyche that developed from 30 years of severe control and living with a hyper critical partner. He developed a type of alter ego that he used to operate in private initially until he was found out and then it became public and he slowly transfered to that persona. I think DID is more common that you say but it doesnt present how people imagine and often you would rarely notice a change in persona. Its not the exagerated personality change that people say it is. There can be subtle similar personailty changes. What say you?

Sadly I can't: as I said, we still don't know a lot of things about how the mind normally and pathologically works...in some cases there's a good response to ssri indicating a correlation with the same way of response in depression but it doesn't give us much to work with

To your second, no, they don't. In rare cases they can have complications (1/100000 or so gets maybe fever of worse response to the vaccine but only with experimental formulations or rare predispositions) but generally no, they don't

I think complex trauma caused by severe ongoing abuse actually changes the biology and chemistry of the brain. I would like to see studies done instead of dicks getting chopped off. I also think that modern life can be traumatic enough to cause those splits hence the massive rise in trans people. I think some people just aren't equiped to cope with it. Having watched it play out and also seeing other types of severe dysphoria play out during abusive relationships I think it would be worth exploring.

Don't give in to their personality: personality disorders can be really difficult to manage (I know, I have to deal with borderlines daily in practice) and you have to stand your ground.
Understand, they think they are better than you and they won't change their idea easily: the most important thing is knowing that it is not true and that they don't have a clear prospective of how to relate to people and familiars. There are no cures known, sadly, if it's what you are asking: cognitive therapy may help but results are not assured

If you have a diagnosis of ocd, cognitive therapy could help in association with ssris but there are only two studies on drug therapy in your kind of disease so...not very validating. Psychological help by a psychoterapist is your best option

No, I don't think so. It's hard work, first med school and then the ward with patients very difficult to manage; you are bound to get at least small episodes of depression now and then.
Also, med students are more at risk of suicide than the common Joe if we listen to statistics so I don't really think we are so much privileged, in terms of mental health

I think that in most cases, hormone therapy is detrimental to the well being of the patient: there is no hard data that shows it better the conditions of the patient and it has really hard repercussions on the general physiology of the body.
To answer your second question, my opinion is: yeah, I think that in some cases there is a social "pressure" to not change per se but at least accepting that what you are experiencing is not a disorder; this can really damage the persone, imagine trying to say the same to any kind of psychotic, it's unthinkable.
I don't know if "industry" is the right word but yeah, it's not absurd thinking there is a over-diagnosing of the disorder (that remember, it's not a disorder, it's just a normal condition of being that you must accept because that's what you are), for what reasons I don't really know; it happens with lots of mental disorders, over-diagnosis is a plague of psychiatry sadly, that helped only in giving it a bad name
