To keep this political for the j*nnies, ITT we discuss the obstacles in our laws which prevent us from realising our dreams and what we can do about that.
I believe the biggest issue in realistic/ affordable homes is the fact non-citizens and internationals can purchase homes in our countries. So instead of competing against the locals to purchase a home (low competition, low price), we are competing against potentially 7 billion people to purchase our local home (extremely high competition, extremely high price). There's a reason the average home price in Australia jumped from $30k (1976) to the current $625k (2018). And if you live in the hellhole Melbourne, the average home price is $914k (2018).

Dreams of a Faustian civilization which is about to hit the wall. Nothing in physics prevents it but I fear the world is going to collapse in one disaster or another soon enough. It may happen at some point in the future but only after things have reorganized and technological progress is partnered with Traditional hierarchical forms.

But I would like a large living room/dining room and a greenhouse in the back. Sadly, I'll probably be stuck in a .25 acre house from the 60s that constantly requires attention with less than twenty feet between me and the houses on either side.

I'm moving to Germany soon, and I've found plenty of cheap housing (that need little to no work) in Mecklenburg-Vorpommern, which also happens to be one of the whiter areas in Germany. Plenty of comfy small towns and nice old homes too.
Would rather jump over to Austria, but homes seem to be too expensive there.
I inherited 600 acres of cattle land that has been in my family since the revolutionary war, located in PA. We have a 100 year old farm house where my parents are living (retired) and while I am happy to retire there some day, I would like to build my own place. I work in I.T. and I'm budgeting to live under my means so that I can have a sizable savings. My desire is to build a house large enough to fit myself, several close friends, and some extended family. (To compare, the farm house is approx. 6000 SQF and 6 bedrooms.) I'm looking at doing a vanity project for myself, but I also want to satisfy being able to house a large number of people comfortably without too much overlap. I'm leaning towards an actual castle style (pic related). I know that building a home is cheaper than buying it (especially already owning the land) but beyond that, I have very little to go on. Any more experienced Jow Forumsacks have constructive input?
I'd have a balcony and porch on the rear face. So I wouldn't ruin the style/ look of the house and still have that comfy outdoor space
