I caught a little bit of the pre-internet era, growing up in the 90's (born 1989).

It's difficult to describe, but the TV was like a god or something. People who managed to make it on TV, even in the background, were treated almost like holy figures. Everyone wanted to talk to them, or even touch the hem of their shirt to make sure they were real. You had no real way to influence the world beyond your own small circle of contacts, the events happening on TV were completely removed from your control.

Rather than world events being sort of a random stew, things seemed more like an ordered progression towards an inevitable outcome. If something happened, it was "destined" to happen. The mindset was that of a story being told, that you have no influence on, and events are entirely pre-determined. You can catch a glimpse of this mindset in flims like Forrest Gump, or this song:

Big movies became cultural touchstones that EVERYONE watched, not just a few people, everyone.
