BJJ literally is the best form of self defense because the easiest way to die in unarmed combat is to get choked out and the entire like first 6 months to a year of BJJ training is learning to defend against and escape from chokeholds. If you don't get choked out in a fist fight the odds that you die without someone pulling out a weapon go way way down. But self defense is a little different from competitive point fighting which is basically what the UFC is. It's also different from other types of unarmed combat. For example I often see clueless people recommend krav maga as good for self defense. This is a terrible recommendation because krav maga is basically a style that was developed for assassins and so there are lots of very lethal techniques designed to be used on an unexpecting opponent for example that are just totally a waste of your time drilling if you are not going to be doing metal gear solid shit and infiltrating an embassy unarmed to kill somebody with your bare hands or whatever other shit mossad agents do.

Boxing and BJJ are the best styles for self DEFENSE because the first year of boxing is teaching you how to avoid punches and the first year of BJJ is teaching you how to avoid getting choked out. If you never get punched in the head and you never get choked out you will survive all unarmed fights so this is why this is the best combo for self DEFENSE.

In the competitive point fighting system of the UFC the best combo is probably muay thai and wrestling or judo because you score so many points for a take down and you want a style with a lot of leg kicks because those also help you keep control of aggression and "octagon control" and win rounds off points.

michael page (undefeated) and lyoto machida have very good point fighting karate styles that i would call superior to boxing/jiu jitsu in the conditions of MMA. however these are styles you need to train for years in from young adolescence to be effective in.
