As someone who actually lived pre-internet, I can tell you that it's roughly like 70/30 in terms of improvements/damage to society.

On one hand, information is available on an insane level of accessibility and just sheer volume of it. Wikipedia alone is a fuckin miracle of modern science, you kids know how awful it was to roam through your local library looking for fucking books when trying to casually learn something? I can access all sorts of indie musicians from around the world and buy their music directly instead of again roaming through a shitty music chain store and only seeing Billboard 200 crap all around me. We can see things happening in real time from different perspectives rather than relying on one camera angle from the evening news, etc.

What does suck about the internet is
-Porn, it absolutely ruined people under the age of like 30
-Politics, it made everyone absolutely retarded where you're either a Kekistani incel or a SJW tranny
-Time sink. When I had free time to myself I would like play the piano or play some sports or do something, but now I just get fat on my computer chair.

Fuck if I ever want to go back to 1991 and dick around with rabbit ears on a television set though. I love living in the future.

All these weird fetishes were absolutely nowhere to be seen even online like 10 years except for the very specific website that did cater to those specific weirdos.

Before the internet, depending on here you live or whatever the most you would see is some titties in movies or maybe some like late night european softcore erotica films - maybe you managed to get your hands on Playboy magazines. It was all very vanilla and normal. if you wanted specific porn you had to A. already have that fetish in you and know it exists and then B. go out to a sex shop and physically buy a tape and hope that no one there knew who you were.

Now you got a whole generation of kids who were beating off since they were like 10 years old when their parents let them have a computer in their room and they were like OH BOY I'M GONNA LOOK AT NAKED BOOBIES and they hop on pornhub or whatever for whatever's on the front page and it's like BLACK TRANNY DRINKS PISS FROM HER COUSIN

It's also why younger millenials and Gen Z s don't have sex as much as previous generations.

Yeah it’s always funny when anons circlejerk about how terrible social media is and how they’re so enlightened for not using it, but fail to realize that Jow Forums is also a social media site

The funniest thing is how the people who use the NPC meme are absolutely unable to articulate any sort of complex thoughts or more than a few words that aren't r9k copy pasta and memes. They all have the same pepe/wojak folder, they all use the same words, they're all mad at the same websites and groups of people for reasons that they're not totally clear about, but somehow it's everyone else who is incapable of original thoughts.

I think there is a difference in Jow Forums and other social media as Jow Forums is a site where you can't really get popular or gain 'clout'.I would even argue that social media isn't all that bad, I think it's more about how you use it . People with an addictive personality who are constantly posting on Instagram seeking validation and trying to get likes is not healthy but just using it a small amount is fine. I personally use Instagram and Facebook just to look at memes, explore my interests and hobbies, and even just look at art I like.

Look at all the bait threads and bait posts, people here suffer from the same thing you describe where they have addictive personalities and are fishing for likes and comments and validation. Here people are fishing for (You)s.

At least on regular social media people mostly get that attention from positive thing or neutral things like taking selfies or posting pics of their drawings or music or whatever.

Here people get the most attention by shitposting as hard as possible, it's all negative.

True that's a good point but I think because of the anonymity and also the fact it is looked down upon by society make it so that getting a lot of (you)s doesn't have the real world impact that unfortunately comes along with likes, retweets, etc.
