The underlying theme in all seasons is the idea that time is a circle, that it runs in cycles. Season one has Matthew Mcconaughey's character talk about how if there were beings that could look down on us from another dimension, then time would look like a flat disc to them. The characters in that flat disc would spend eternity living the same moments over and over and over. That scene is really a fourth wall break, because he is describing you the viewer as that being on a higher plane looking at the characters in his world in the form of a DVD, forcing those children to suffer in that room, over and over and over. The second season is really about how the children relive the sins of their parents. Every character either abuses a kid in some way, or they were abused in some way. Every character has a parent or is a parent with a vice. The kids all grow up to relive the vices of their parents or are reliving the vices of their parents, time is cyclical. The same holds true for the third season, with the main nigger bouncing between the past and the present, using pieces of each to solve the crime.
