WW1 bankrupted the British Empire so much so it didn’t have the resources to start re-arming until 1939 and by then it was too late. WW2 destroyed the British Empire’s credibility as a global hegemon, the defeat in France was the nail in the coffin and after that Britain was waiting for the US to re-arm and for the Germans to exhaust themselves against the Russian’s for it’s forces to re-enter the continent but it was all over by then, Britain was simply riding on the coat tails of the US. The post-war dissolution of its Empire was the price it paid for American support in WW2 and protection from the USSR in post-war Europe.

The French Army alone had more men, tanks and artillery than the Wehrmacht. In 1939 we had the largest Navy and largest professional volunteer Army in the world. We had the second largest air force. We had the worlds reserve currency and the largest empire.

After Dunkirk where Billions of dollars worth of equipment was just left we had to get the US to help us. They agreed but only if we transferred all of our Gold reserves to them.
