This isn't how taxes work. Taxes are automatically deducted from your income. You have to file them every year and you receive a partial refund after you do so. Sometimes you can receive deductions in your taxes if you did things like donate to charity. You can either see a tax attorney to help you file them, or you can just use TurboTax. Why do zoomers make such a big deal about taxes? It's seriously so fucking easy, I did mine in half an hour.

Our government doesn't actually know how much we owe, just a ballpark figure. It's an honor system. The threat of an audit keeps most people honest.

Yes they do dumbass. They have for a long time. Not everything is perfect and you might not get in too much issues by "forgetting" to file X or Y, but eventually you will be ass fucked if you make a big enough "mistake" or "forget" for too long/too big of a number. I've done tax compliance for about 5 years now and 100% of the time where the taxpayer did fuck up and it's evident they did, they are the ones that are screwed in the end, not the IRS. There's enough backups in place along the compliance chain to ensure the government gets its money.
