It's funny how much pottery there is in OP's Adams quote. Adams son was of course John Quincy Adams, a successful man and president himself. Adams II had three sons, who had at least one female cousin. The cousin fucked all three of the sons and they all fell madly in love with her. They spent years courting her and spoiling her, and when she picked her favorite male cousin, the other two boycotted the wedding. One committed suicide after a year, the other died of liver failure from alcoholism after a decade. The Adams family defines the great generation --> boomer generation cycle.

Nothing. His children, broadly speaking, did study math and engineering - building the world we have today. His grandkids, broadly speaking, went to American universities and studied art and philosophy and such (you call them snowflakes).
The problem for you (you being Jow Forums in general - rural white men) is that he was an urban elite and his kids and grandchildren were set on the path he describes. He was not talking about the rural farming (later blue collar workers) poor because, frankly, he did not view them as worthy of his consideration.
