Actually, the first recorded landing was by English Captain John Strong in 1690. France and Britain then each founded short colonies on the island around the same time, 1764 and 1766 respectively. France, however, ceded sovereignty of its colony to Spain. Britain abandoned its colony on the island in the 1774s, but never formally renounced sovereignty, while Spain likewise abandoned its colony without formally renouncing its claim of sovereignty.

Either way, the point I was getting at was that one half of Argentina's claim to the islands invalidates the other half. Argentina claims their settlement predates the British colony (since they settled it in the 1830s just before the British returned), but they also claim the Falklands belong to them because the nearest land is Patagonia. However, Patagonia still belonged to the Mapuche in the 1830s, making Argentina's claim to the islands invalid, by their own logic. Argentina had no more claim to the islands in the 1830s than Britain did, and thus the 1830s settlement can't be used as a prior claim to the British colony.

People are worried because for decades the border had heavy security checkpoints and it wasn't easy to pass back and forth between the Republic of Ireland and Northern Ireland but nowadays you can get across without even realising it. And because crossing the border is part of daily life for a lot of people there, they were worried that access would be changed under the EU's freedom of movement terms. Also stemming from that, there were greater fears that a border change would restart conflicts in Northern Ireland.
