We had something like that pre 1989 too. Made it practicaly impossible to get in to engineering or medicin, if your parents had a degree or worse a shop. You got ton of extra points for being female, parents being in party, parents being workers etc
It did not work very well, because females don't pick some types of specialisations in medcin, and suddenly after close to 50 years of communist, we have a ton of dentists and pediatritians, and almost no shrinks, few surgeons etc. Good Luck to america with a similar system.
