By Faith Alone

Can we have a discussion on Sola Fide? I read cries of 'lazy proddies' on this board whenever there's a denominational shit-flinging contest with Catholics so let me explain it to you.

Works is about believing that God loves you first and wants to save you and in response to that love you want to show how you love God back by doing what He wants you to do, or doing what that you know will make Him happy. Protestants don't believe in the works because even if you work till you drop, you won't earn Salvation. This is where the Catholic sperging out happens, because Catholics think if Salvation is a free gift, why work for something that's free? Sure, you *just* have to have faith, but rather than a cause of justification, work comes as a manifestation of that faith, a necessary consequence of seeing the light, like a candle and a flame.

There is really no functional difference between faith and works.

This is creationist-tier mental gymnastics to invert the philosophies of catholics and protestants. Protties are clearly the ones who prioritize works over faith alone.

Which one is correct?

A whole lot of words OP. Just be brief; the thread is now over.

I don't really know what the other user is trying to say. I just know that if you believe in Christ, you will strive to be like him. Thus faith in and works are the same thing.

You confuse righteousness with salvation.

read the filename please

What now? Will you read it too?

Protestants actually believe that any jackass on the street can proclaim himself a interpreter of God. That's why they don't want you to know about holy works. Because protestantism is a cult and they just want you to believe all the heretical garbage they spew, based only on what they Say

Both are, in a way. Believing in the sacrifice of Christ is a big part of being a Christian, but so is following the example Christ set. Neither takes precedence over the other. When Jesus said that he is the only way to God, he meant that following his example is the way to salvation, not that merely believing in him would grant you eternal life. It's stupid and evil to think that a genocidal maniac could go to heaven just by believing in Jesus.

The apostle Paul was not divine. He had contact with the holy spirit, but that still does not make him a god. He can be wrong. If "sola fide" is accurate exegesis, then he definitely is wrong.

It's stupid and evil to think that a murdering thief on a cross could go to heaven just by believing in Jesus with no works!

Okay, you can go back to worshipping your fish hat man :)

Literally the opposite of what you said. Martin Luther despised the church for placing emphasis on ‘works’ - indulgences, payment to the church for reduced time in purgatory, are a prime example of worldly works being taken too far.

Look I can quote the Bible too

Ephesians 2:8–9 "For by grace ye are saved through faith: and that not of yourselves: it is the gift of God: not of works, lest any man should boast."

This is clearly not an example of sola fide but the forgiveness that Jesus taught throughout his life. Yes, even thieves and murderers can find forgiveness.

Is buying indulgences an example of a culture that prioritizes works or a culture that prioritizes faith alone? The church placed so little value on works that they could be merely paid off. To pretend that the catholic church prioritizes works is laughable. The catholic doctrine IS sola fide.

Because protestants were inside the hajnal line which means theyd work like that anyway.
Catholics being everywhere else needed that motivation to do shit. Both are fine

Do you have any further info on this argument, it sounds interesting.

It is through works that you find life here on earth, it’s pretty simple
