Today during my 14.5 mile bike ride, something profound happened to me. As I was cruising along, I saw something ahead of me fall from a treed and plop onto the cement. When I got closer, I saw that was a chipmunk. It fell from a height of about 30 feet from a tree right onto the pavement and died. It has recently rained, so most likely, it simply slipped, fell, and died. It was a profound moment because it was undeniable evidence that our own lives could be cut short at a moments notice, despite being fully adapted to our environments, and despite our best efforts.
Take the time to tell the people you care about how much you appreciate them. Take the time to appreciate life itself, how amazing and preposterous that anything exists at all, and take the time to thank God for making it all work in the first place. You just don't know when the reaper will come for you. Live life to the fullest, don't be afraid to make mistakes, don't be afraid to endure hardships, and always strive to improve the quality of your own life. If and when you figure out the secret to living a meaningful life, work to alleviate the suffering of others.
