to put it in perspective iowa (and to a lesser extent the other, lesser midwestern states) grow so much corn that not only can we not hope to eat it all, but our fucking hogs (of which there are ~10x more of than people) can't eat it all either. so instead of letting it rot we choose to turn the surplus into biofuel. it still isn't as good as gasoline, but it helps the fuel we have go that much farther
