The only thing Hitler censored from the press was defeatism during WW2. There was very little need to censoe anything else as public opinion was already massively in his favor.

You already live in an authoritarian country, the difference is whether the government is just and supports the people or crooked and supports the oligarchs. You only have a narrow range of freedoms. The freedom to do anything that is not a threat to the elites.

A study was done that first asked Americans whether they supported a dictatorship. Most said no. Then they were asked which political topics they supported (eg. abortion, immigration, etc.) and then asked whether they would support a president who forced these decisions through over congress. Most people said they would.

So in effect, most people DO want a dictatorship, but they want a dictatorship that represents their beliefs.
