As a democrat living in California I can’t say I’m happy with this proposal. We already have way too many homeless people here, and way too many people working for low wages. Like how is it fair to the working poor citizens of California to pay for the health insurance for citizens of other sovereign nations that are illegally in California? I seriously don’t get the logic. Unless they’re asylum seekers of course but still, if they didn’t even come through that route, then they shouldn’t be guaranteed healthcare unless we know for sure that they’re working and paying taxes..

Yeah, welcome to the Republican Party. I’m all for people immigrating but if they’re a net drain on the system we can’t afford it. For the record we feel the same way about naturalized citizens, we don’t want to have a huge welfare state and people relying on the system, but in the immigration field we at least get the option to pick and choose who we want to allow in.
I’m willing to have a conversation about having welfare programs for people in need, but I’m never going to agree that we need to expand our broken system to include people who are in direct violation of federal immigration law.

Because this isn’t east Berlin, cops can’t just detain you and demand you show identification unless they have reasonable belief that crime is afoot. There is a lot of debate about this, especially in border states, I believe this is what the “Sherif Joe” controversy was about.
I’m fine with all of that. I like living in a country with a reasonable expectation of privacy and protection from the government. However if you want to suck from the government’s teats then I think it’s 100% appropriate to ensure you’re actually entitled to the services and not an illegal alien.

They have to have a reason to detain you. If you’re detained you are subject to be identified. They can’t just stop you on the street and ask for your ID and arrest you if you don’t produce one. You can be detained for lots of reasons.

I personally have no problem with showing a cop my ID. However, I don’t want it to be a law that everyone has to have an ID and cops can stop you for no reason just to ask you to ID yourself. I don’t want to live in an authoritarian nanny state. I also don’t want the government to be able to stop me for no reason and take my guns away for no reason, that would probably help get guns out of the hands of criminals, but I’m not willing to sacrifice my principles for it.
If you don’t get it, fine, you don’t have to. Most Americans don’t get it either, which is why they love big government when their party is in power and complain for 8 years that their opponent shouldn’t have won their election. The less government intervention in my life, the better.

No, they can’t. They can only detain you if they have a reason to, which normally is in response to an investigation of a possible crime.
They can approach you on the street and talk to you like any normal person can/would, even if they ask you to show your ID it’s not always a lawful order, in those cases they’re just preying on your ignorance of the law. Just ask if you’re being detained, if the answer is no tell them to have a nice day and keep walking. If the answer is yes then don’t start a ruckus because they’ll most likely come down harder on you.

But im from western europe and grew up in a small town and sometimes as a teenager police just came over to me with a friendly "hey, how are you? What are you up to, could i see your id please?" They were very friendly about it. First it bothered me but then i understood that if they do this regularly they know everybody around and as soon as they is someone new or illegal they can immediately identify that person and act if they cause any harm.
And that made me feel safe.
