The countries have high tax rates, massive regulation, welfare states, and state ownership of parts of the economy. The idea that they aren't at the very least eminently socialistic is retardation. The only people who think otherwise are the elements on the Left (Who think the Marxist definition of "Socialism" is the only one and parrot it constantly) and the Neo-cuck "right" (who also think the Marxist definition of socialism is the only one and whinge about it constantly). So as simply as can be said: Marx/Engels did not invent the term "socialism", in fact it had been around at least 100 years before either of them were even born. As such they do not get the monopoly on defining the term. The Social Democratic parties' stated aims were Socialist (The Bolsheviks who founded the Soviet Union were literally called "The Russian Social Democratic Labour Party - Bolshevik faction", and they were communists) was the foundation of Socialism, and that continued into the 1970's. The only differentiation between Social Democracy and Socialism came after the 1970's. Even then the Social Democrats were called "Socialists" by everyone, including themselves.
The simple reality is that the Nordic Countries are fundamentally Socialist countries, the difference is that they accepted elements of Markets and International Trade as part of their economic model, which I might add were never explicitly anti-socialist in the first place.

Systems like this would never work in America.

I live here so I'll provide some insight
Sweden has no minimum wage, a lot of companies use group agreements which kind of set a technical minimum but its usually a flat bottom for the whole production staff in a given company rather than an industry rate country-wide.
There is a robust welfare system but you aren't necessarily entitled to anything, you need to apply and prove you contributed to society first (so in a sense the social welfare system is a bank with only a scant few taking more than they put in over a lifetime)
Also the govt charges a lot of taxes but at the same time many services need constant maintenance due to turn over on volume of traffic and weather. The winters here for eg destroy the roads in most of the country, at $11million AUD per km that's a LOT of money just for roading.
